Increased concern over sovereign debt affected the Riksbank's work in 2011

Date

During 2011, the Riksbank's activities were affected by the unease on the financial markets resulting from sovereign debt problems in several countries. At the same time, the Riksbank's profit increased by SEK 3.4 billion, to SEK 3.9 billion. This can be seen in the Riksbank's Annual Report for 2011, which has been submitted to the Riksdag (the Swedish parliament).

"We now have another year of international financial unease behind us. It was a year when economic developments were marked by the uncertainty over sovereign debt in several countries in the euro area and also in the United States. Developments on the financial markets after the summer were at times dramatic, and the economic recovery that had started in 2010 came to a halt. The political events regarding the situation in several euro countries at the end of the year also raised questions regarding the forms for the economic cooperation in Europe.", states the Governor of the Riksbank, Stefan Ingves, in his comments on the Riksbank's Annual Report for 2011.

Among other data, the Annual Report presents a review of the Riksbank's work on dealing with the effects of the increased market unease and at the same time developing financial regulations and cooperation both in Sweden and abroad. The Riksbank also describes the continued work on designing a new series of banknotes and coins, and reports the results of its other activities during 2011. The Annual Report also contains the Riksbank's balance sheet and profit and loss account.

The Riksbank's Annual Report for 2011 can be obtained as a parliamentary document in Swedish via the link below. A version of the Annual Report in the Riksbank's standard layout will be published in both Swedish and English on 30 March 2012, when it will be possible to download the report or order copies through this website.
