Riksbank postpones the production launch of a new technical platform for the payment system

Date

The Riksbank decided yesterday, in consultation with the major banks and others, to postpone the production launch of the new technical platform for the payment system that should have taken place over the weekend 3-6 October.

“The new system has been successfully tested together with the banks and it is ready for the production launch. However, launching a new technical system always entails increased risks of disruptions during an introductory period. The Riksbank has therefore decided to postpone the production launch of the new technical platform for the payment system to avoid potential technical disruptions contributing to increasing the unease in the Swedish financial market," says Kai Barvell, Head of the General Secretariat at the Riksbank and chairman of the project's management group.

The Riksbank has for some years been working on developing a new technical platform for the RIX payment system in collaboration with the four major Swedish banks (SEK, Svenska Handelsbanken, Nordea and Swedbank), Bankgirocentralen, VPC, the Swedish National Debt Office and Danske Bank as well as the Swedish Bankers’ Association.

A new technical system is needed because the administration and maintenance of a system becomes more complicated as the system ages. A new system gives us more efficient administration and maintenance and provides the users with access to new functions.

The timing of the production launch was determined a year ago. A new date for the production launch has not yet been decided; however it will not be before the end of this year.
