Riksbank permitted to gather more information on securities

Date

The Riksdag has decided to amend the Sveriges Riksbank Act so that the Riksbank may gather information on issued securities from Swedish issuers, irrespective of whether these issuers are under the supervision of Finansinspektionen (the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority) or not. The Riksbank will thus be able to gather such information when it is needed to monitor developments on the foreign-exchange and credit markets or to oversee the stability of the payment system.

At present, the Riksbank does not have the right to request information on issued securities from companies or securities institutions that are not under the supervision of Finansinspektionen. This limits the Riksbank’s possibilities to oversee the stability of the payment system and to analyse the structure of the outstanding securities liabilities of the issuers from a stability perspective. The Riksdag has therefore approved the Riksbank’s proposal to amend the Sveriges Riksbank Act in this way.

The amendment will come into force on 1 July 2011.
