Riksbank's historical collections transferred to Royal Coin Cabinet

The Executive Board of the Riksbank has decided to transfer as a gift the Riksbank’s collection of coins, medals, banknotes and other historical objects to the Royal Coin Cabinet, the National Museum of Economy.

The collection has been deposited with the Royal Coin Cabinet over a long period of time and has in practice become part of the museum’s collections. The first deposit was made by the Riksbank in the 1940s, and since then around 20 or so deposits have been made.

The Riksbank’s historical collection comprises a total of around 20,000 objects. It is mainly housed in the Royal Coin Cabinet’s premises at Slottsbacken in Stockholm and in Tumba Bruk museum. Some of the objects are displayed in these museums’ permanent exhibitions. 

The Royal Coin Cabinet is part of the organisation of the Museums of National Antiquities and is a specialized museum with a national responsibility in areas such as the history of money and finance as well as medals.

The transfer will take place on 1 July 2007.
