Executive Board appoints new department heads

At its meeting today the Executive Board of the Riksbank appointed Kai Barvèll as new head of the Market Operations Department. Mr Barvèll currently works at the Secretariat of the Executive Board and is managing director of the Riksbank's subsidiary Svensk Kontantförsörjning AB. He is expected to take up the post of department head in autumn 2004. Mr Barvèll has many years' experience from the Riksbank, including managerial positions at the former Monetary and Exchange Rate Policy Department and former Payment System Department. Before taking up his position as managing director for Svensk Kontantförsörjning AB, Mr Barvèll worked at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) where his tasks included evaluations and technical assistance in issues related to payment systems and exchange rate policy.

The Executive Board also decided, in line with the press release of 29 April regarding reorganisation, to appoint Mats Galvenius as head of the new general secretariat. Mr Galvenius is currently head of the Market Operations Department. Mr Galvenius is a graduate of business administration and has previously served as adviser to Sirkka Hämäläinen on the ECB Executive Board. He will take up his post as head of the general secretariat on 1 June.

Deputy head of department Eva Julin will act as head of the Market Operations Department as from 1 June until Kai Barvèll takes up the post.
