New Riksbank organisation

The Riksbank is being reorganised so as to focus more clearly on the objectives and functions assigned to it in the Riksbank Act. The responsibility for the Riksbank’s fields of operation is clarified, along with a heightening of organisational and managerial efficiency.

The activities of five earlier departments (Economics; Monetary & Exchange Rate Policy; Payment System; Cashiers; and Financial Statistics) are assigned to three new, larger departments: Financial Stability Department, Market Operations Department, and Monetary Policy Department.

Together with administrative mergers, this reduces the number of departments. The new organisation is effective from 1 June 2000.

Financial Stability Department

Responsible for overseeing and analysing payment system stability, as well as for compiling and publishing financial market statistics. Department head: Martin Andersson.

Market Operations Department

Manages the Riksbank’s foreign reserves and the RIX payment system. Implements monetary and exchange rate policy; responsible for the supply of notes and coins. Department head: Christina Lindenius.

Monetary Policy Department

Responsible for overseeing and analysing monetary stability, besides compiling and publishing balance of payments statistics. Department head: Claes Berg.

Administration Department

Formed by merging four departments: Organisation & Administration; Personnel; Planning & Accounting; and Administrative Staff. Department head: Agneta Rönström.

The other seven departments are unchanged (Secretariat of the Executive Board; Information; International; IT; Risk Management; Research; and Internal Auditing).

As a consequence of the above, certain changes have also been made to the drafting responsibilities of the members of the Executive Board. The new arrangement can be accessed on the Riksbank’s website, www.riksbank.se, under the heading Riksbank/Organisation.Press photos of the new heads of department are also to be found on the website, under the heading For journalists/Photogallery.
