General Council proposes a smaller Executive Board

The General Council has decided that a proposal be submitted to the Riksdag (Sweden’s parliament) whereby as of 1 January 2001 the Riksbank’s Executive Board is to consist of not more than six but at least three members. If the Riksdag adopts the proposal, next spring the General Council intends to initiate a review of how many members the Executive Board should consist of. The General Council intends to present its fuller assessments to the Riksdag in good time before the autumn 2001 parliamentary session. For the time being the General Council will accordingly not be appointing a sixth member of the Executive Board when the position becomes vacant at the turn of this year.

The amended Riksbank Act that came into force almost two years ago stipulates that the Executive Board is to consist of six members, appointed for a period of six years. The activities of the Riksbank have taken shape in accordance with the amended Act and the Bank’s endeavours to maintain price stability have acquired a broad foundation in Swedish society. Since 1999, moreover, the Riksbank’s work force has decreased from 750 to 450 persons. Against this background the General Council considers that the size of the Executive Board should now be reviewed.

In accordance with the Riksbank Act, the General Council has consulted the Executive Board about the proposal.
