Following the financial crisis, the work of preparing a new and stronger regulatory framework for banks was initiated. These regulations, named Basel III, have now for the most part been completed.
In his capacity as Chairman of the Basel Committee for Banking Supervision, the organisation responsible for drafting the Basel III regulations, Governor of the Riksbank Stefan Ingves has contributed an article to the latest issue of South East Asian Central Banks (SEACEN) Financial Stability Journal. In this article, Stefan Ingves describes how the Basel III regulations are intended to strengthen financial stability globally. He also explains that the implementation of the regulatory framework will be the primary challenge for the Basel Committee in the period ahead. A comparable and credible implementation around the world will be necessary if the rules are to have the intended effect.
