SEK 1.8 billion left – the banks are able to accept banknotes until 31 August

The older 20, 50 and 1,000-krona banknotes are now invalid. There are still about 41 million 20-krona banknotes, 6 million 50-krona banknotes and 600 000 1 000-krona banknotes in circulation.
Now that these banknotes are invalid, you can no longer use them as a means of pay-ment. However, you can still deposit them in a bank account until 31 August 2016. Please contact your bank in advance to find out the easiest way to do this.
If you still have invalid banknotes after 31 August 2016, you can send them to the Riks-bank, which will redeem them by depositing the value of the notes, less a charge of SEK 100, into a bank account. Please note that the banks and the Riksbank apply the provisions of the money laun-dering act, which means, among other things, that you may be asked questions as to where the money comes from. You may also have to present copies of receipts, agreements or invoices.
The next stage in the banknote and coin changeover will be the introduction of the new 100- and 500-krona banknotes and the new 1-, 2- and 5-krona coins in October 2016.
