Background
Sweden is to have new banknotes and coins. Issuing of the banknotes will begin in 2015, while the coins will be introduced in 2016. In April 2012 the Riksbank presented the basis for the design of the new banknotes. With regard to the coins, the Riksbank's supplier, Mint of Finland, was given the task in 2011 of producing a number of proposals for the design of the new coins. Five well-known Swedish designers were given the task of producing proposals, which were then presented to the Riksbank. On 11 September 2012 the Riksbank will announce which proposal the General Council of the Riksbank has decided shall form the artistic base for the design of the new coins.
