Prize for designing a commemorative coin

Date

Governor Stefan Ingves yesterday presented a prize for designing a commemorative coin with a Selma Lagerlöf motif to be issued in 2008. Jon Holm, a student of the Royal University College of Fine Arts, received the prize at a ceremony held at the Royal Coin Cabinet in Stockholm.

The 150th anniversary of the birth of Selma Lagerlöf will be commemorated next year with a special coin minted in gold and silver. The Riksbank has long issued commemorative coins to celebrate people and events of national interest.

This year the Riksbank particularly wishes to encourage fresh talent in coin design – an area where Sweden has long and strong traditions. With this in mind, AB Myntverket (the Swedish Mint) had invited students from the Royal University College of Fine Arts to send in suggestions.

Stefan Ingves and the head of Myntverket, Barbro Brunman, observed that all of the seven design sketches received were of high quality. There is evidently considerable fresh design talent.

The Lagerlöf coin has been produced in consultation with the Selma Lagerlöf society and the preliminary launch date is March 2008. It will be sold through AB Myntverket in Eskilstuna. The design was adopted by the General Council of the Riksbank on 26 October this year.
