The Riksbank's role in the economy
What role does the Riksbank play in the economy? The Riksbank's work largely concerns issuing banknotes and coins and ensuring that they maintain their value over time. The Riksbank also has the tasks of ensuring that money is difficult to counterfeit and of overseeing the entire system for making payments to ensure that it works smoothly.
One objective – low inflation
The Riksbank is Sweden’s central bank. The Bank has one objective – to ensure that inflation is low and stable. The Riksbank has therefore been made responsible for Sweden's monetary policy, that is, influencing inflation through the interest rate. But the Bank has also been given the task of overseeing the system for making payments. Additionally, the Riksbank issues banknotes and coins and manages Sweden's reserves of gold and foreign currencies.
